HIGH COURT IN MERU FINDS THAT THE SUSPECT IN THE MURDER OF ISIOLO WOMAN HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER ELIZABETH EKARU HAS A CASE TO ANSWER

On 31 January 2024:

High Court judge Justice Edward Muriithi ruled that Patrick Naweet who was arrested and charged following the gruesome murder of woman human rights defender Elizabeth Ekaru has a case to answer .

Patrick is accused of stabbing Elizabeth several times leading to her death on 3 January 2022. He entered a not guilty plea to the charge and was provided for with a state lawyer to defend him during the trial in which the prosecution presented to court 11 witnesses who consistently linked Patrick to the gruesome act.

By being put on his defense, the accused would have an uphill battle to convince the court that he should not be found guilty of the charges of murder and sentenced for the acts.

Defenders Coalition has worked very closely with Elizabeth’s colleagues and other human rights organizations like Isiolo Gender Watch and Amnesty International Kenya to ensure justice for the family of Elizabeth, whose murder devastated the family and the women of Isiolo County, who relied in her community work to protect their rights to own land and property in a highly patriarchal community.

Her tragic death highlights the widespread violence faced by women human rights defenders as the Kenya public embraces conservative approaches to women participation in leadership. A steady rise in cases of Femicide is a worrying trend that concerns the human rights community in Kenya.

Defenders Coalition will continue continue to support legal representation for the family and trial observation of the court process by the community. This is to ensure the family access justice within the formal justice mechanisms and assure the community that the law protects frontline human right defenders when they conduct their legitimate work.
